What does a running coach do?

One of the questions I get asked most often is what it's like to be a running coach; I mean, what do I do all day? What I've come to realise over the last year of launching my own business is that this career is a bigger responsibility than I ever initially considered. I love this wild landscape for its vastness (Bella and I are barely visible on the hillside.) I love its peace and quiet. I love how it changes so rapidly with the weather - I’ve been up here in glorious summer sunshine, in howling wind, in thick snow, in swirling cloud and fog, in slippery ice, in battering hailstone. It demands respect. Its steep fells may look enticing but its higher slopes hide many grisly secrets: barbarous murders, danger in deep bogs and hidden mine shafts, ghostly burial grounds. There is so much history up here and every time I come up I discover something new so that it feels familiar and exciting all at once. I’m told the views are amazing up on Holcombe Moor but today we struggled to even see Peel Tower until we were right next to it. First time I’ve been up there, which is surprising considering it’s only 30 minutes away. Learnt a lot of local history today: about the part Sir Robert Peel played in keeping food affordable to the masses; about the tragic murder of Ellen Strange who has a stone and a cairn dedicated to her on the moor, and the history of the giant Pilgrim’s Cross which used to stand atop the moor. Fascinating stuff and a beautiful run, although I will be back on a clearer day to admire the views.
